Strip Length Optimization

I was looking through some documentation on an older chip and, saw that internally this PVR supports strip sizes of 1, 2, 4, and 6. Internally what is the benefit of setting the instruction word to support a strip size of 1 as opposed to a strip size of 6.



I assume a strip size of 6 is faster for a large set of vertices. But if that were the case then in most cases you would want a strip size of 6, and a strip size of 2 for sprites. So when would it be advantageous to set a strip size of 1 or 4, and how important is it internally to set the strip size?
