translating a bone node

How would one translate a SPODNode (bone) manually, we are using bones in our vehicle to rig the suspension, wheels, etc., ?

What is the best way to translate/rotate an SPODNode? Changing the pfPosition doesn’t seem to do anything.

There is no animation on the vehicle, and animation is not checked in the Max exporter, just Skin.
